When the Great War crushed humanity, those who survived lost their loved ones, their homes and all their goods. They were forced to look for food, water and medicine, but they also had to look for those they had lost. People identify themselves by their work, place of residence, property. During the Great War, not just buildings were destroyed, entire cultures were erased from the face of the earth. The brutal years that followed were the next test for the survivors: to find the purpose of their existence or to go completely mad. But the more obvious threat to people was what was nearby, what was patiently waiting for someone to let it out.
And this happened a hundred years after the war, and it destroyed people much more violently than the weapons and bombs of the old war.
One single neutron entering DNA could create a cancerous tumor, but the doses of radiation that people experienced had unpredictable results. Several generations of DNA changes led to the fact that creatures began to mutate. And this is precisely what explains the origin of the monsters of the Wasteland. But not everyone..
After all, there are those mutants who are very similar to people, but… many times more. Some of them are more dangerous than Deathclaws, and stronger than a man in Power Armor. They call themselves Super Mutants, and they are not the result of an overdose of radiation, but the result of a pre-planned genetic intervention.
Holotapes left over from pre-war times indicate that the United States started this with good intentions. A rival country attacked America with biological weapons, which led to the “New Plague”, and the Americans created their own antidote.
Initially, the task was to do something that would make the American population invulnerable to viruses that the enemy could use. And in the end, this “Man-made Evolution Virus” worked, but the result was not what was expected. Laboratory animals under the influence of the virus not only acquired immunity to diseases, but also became stronger, smarter, but also became unrecognizably distorted.
In Maryland, the virus was placed in the Vault-Tec Vault, and became part of terrible experiments.
According to documents found in Vault-Tec computers, the people who were in the shelter were forced to use the virus by the Overseer, a man who was supposed to protect them from the consequences of the war, but as a result, people suffered even more than those who remained outside.
